Rosie O’Donnell Racist: The Comedian Mistook Priyanka Chopra As The Daughter Of Deepak Chopra
In February, Rosie O’Donnell made a TikTok video explaining an awkward encounter with Priyanka Chopra and her husband, Nick Jonas, in Nobu, Malibu.
The comedian was having dinner with her son and his girlfriend when she went over to greet the Chopra-Jonas couple. She told Nick that he was terrific in Kingdom.
Then, she said to Chopra, “Hi, I know your dad.” Chopra responded, “You do? Who’s my dad?.” Rosie confidently said, “Deepak Chopra.” The Bollywood star replied in confusion, “No….and Chopra is a common name.”
The talk show host mistook Deepak Chopra, an Indian-American author, to be Priyanka’s Father because both have the same last names. She was under the impression that Nick Jonas was married to Deepak Chopra’s daughter.
Towards the end of the TikTok video, Rosie explained that she was embarrassed and apologized to the couple for the misunderstanding. However, she had not once mentioned the Quantico star by her first name and called her “Someone Chopra” and “The Chopra wife.”
Her apology did not come across as genuine, and viewers felt it was racially insensitive to assume all Indians with similar last names are related. Moreover, the tone in which she apologized came across as condescending.
In response, Chopra made a statement on her Instagram story stating that the comedian should have taken the time to Google her name or simply reach out personally before making a public apology for a private matter.
The Bollywood star wrote, “We ALL deserve to be respected for our unique individuality and not be referred to as ‘someone’ or ‘wife,’, especially in a sincere apology.”
O’Donnell made another TikTok video to apologize to Priyanka.
In 2005, the comedian offended the Asian community on the show “The View” by mocking Chinese people’s accents with a racial slur, “ching chong.”
She said, “So apparently ‘ching-chong’ is a very offensive way to mock Asians. Some people have told me it’s as bad as the n-word. Was I like? I didn’t know that.”
The 60-year-old actress later apologized for the mockery but added that she might likely do something similar again but not intentionally, as that is how her brain functions.
