Shareef O’Neal Facts

  • Shareef, initially, did not follow in the footsteps of his legendary father and used to skateboard. He started taking basketball seriously only after enduring a disappointing performance at a middle school AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) match. He began getting regular basketball training when he was 13 years old.
  • In late September 2018, it was announced that he would miss the 2018-19 college basketball season for the UCLA Bruins, but remain enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a medical redshirt (a practice in US college athletics to delay/suspend an athlete’s participation to lengthen their eligibility period).
  • This was because he had been diagnosed with a heart condition for which he underwent surgery in December 2018. Over the next few months, Shareef wore a heartbeat-monitoring device during practice.
