Prince William and Kate Middleton are not letting the COVID-19 pandemic keep them from performing their royal duties. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge surprised school children in northern England this week with one of their first ever royal engagement via video calls on the Zoom app.

William and Kate sat side-by-side at Anmer Hall in Norfolk as they talked to the staff of Casterton Primary Academy in Burnley, Lancashire. They also spoke to the students who are kids of essential workers – healthcare staff and emergency service personnel – who were being cared for by the staff.

“Well done, honestly, to you and everyone who’s in during this time. It must be such a relief for all the parents who are key workers to know that the normality is there for their children — they’ve got the structure and they’ve got a safe place for them to be, so really really well done to all of you,” Kate said.

William thanked the staff for “keeping it all going,” and asked them to pass on the many messages of support to the rest of the staff and volunteers who are “doing a great job.”

During the call, William and Kate got to see all of the kids’ arts and crafts projects for Easter, and the Duke of Cambridge revealed that they would be eating “a lot of chocolate” during the holiday weekend. Kate added that William is already eating all of their Easter candy.

William and Kate’s Zoom username is “DOC,” which stands for Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Their chat with school staff and students was their latest virtual royal visit – and the first video to be posted online – but they did make another call a few days prior.

Last week, William and Kate called healthcare workers on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19 at Queen’s Hospital Burton in Staffordshire, England. Senior doctor in the National Health Service – Dr. Amged El-Hawrani – was one of the first medics in the UK who died from the coronavirus.

“We’d just like to say from the two of us how proud we are of all of you and how amazingly you are all doing under extreme circumstances,” William told the staff during the call. “I know all of you see this as your job and that you get on with it, but this is a different level and you are doing an incredible job.”

Prince William added that the whole country was proud of them, and he thanked them for everything they are doing and the hours they are putting in. Kate Middleton added that they were being stretched in “all sorts of ways” while caring for patients under extreme circumstances, and reminded them to take care of themselves and each other.
